In the early part of the 12th century
Bishop Frederico was on his travelss through Italy to visit
Rome.
An Aficionado of wine, he sent his aide, Giovanni ahead with
istructions to write on the door of any hostelry where the wine
was good, the word "Est, - ii is".
legend has it that in a scenic village just outside Rome the
wine was so good that Giovanni scribbled the word "Est,
Est, Est".
The party travelled no further, remaining happily whilst tasting
and tippling until the end of their days, but not before the
good Bishop named his aide San Giovanni
(Saint John)
as a token of his gratitude. |
